This page will change as new paintings are developed so please bookmark. What the thumbnails do not show is the size of painting and these vary from 9" to 48" in width.

I used to paint every feather and indeed every barb on every feather but my paintings lacked life, after taking a break from painting birds I returned to my favorite subject with a more overall approach and depicted the subject in its environment. Although some of the detail has been taken out I am more at ease with the 'feeling' of the subject and the overall painting.

Light and atmosphere are as important as the subject itself. I want to achieve a sense of realism rather than trying to create a photo realistic painting and looking into the future I feel this will give me a greater freedom portraying of the natural world especially subjects like the sea.

I use field study for inspiration and seldom paint something I have not seen or witnessed first hand, generally it is the habitat which creates the finished work but on occasions the wildlife subject is the reason for the painting and I am even drawn to painting just that subject with no background detail.
